This book is a unique view inside the life and work of one of the most private, but also one of the most loved, most applauded and most influential figures in street art. From small and simple stencils to complex multimedia events, the distinctive and groundbreaking art of Blek le Rat is showcased here for the first time, demonstrating the fascinating development of his technique and creativity over two decades. This book, with its indepth personal exploration of Bleks motives and working methods, and his own comments on the meaning of his art, also offers a taste of the evolution of urban art from New York, Paris, Barcelona and Buenos Aires, to London, Taipei, Naples and Berlin. It will inspire and inform enthusiasts of street and urban culture and students alike.

URBAN AFFAIRS introduces a generation of artists who confront the challenge of working in public spaces to develop new forms of artistic approach. As the name suggests, “Street Art,” with its striking and recognizable motifs, is found in the metropolises of today's urban society- adopting, reviving and influencing multiple aspects of collective urban life. Applied Street Art techniques such as graffiti writing, stencil, painting, readymade, collage, drawing and graphic design will be transferred to the exhibition rooms. All artworks will be specifically created for the exhibition, which will culminate in an opening on Saturday afternoon with numerous live events and performances that invite the visitor to interact with the exhibition and the artists themselves. Selected works will also be later integrated in the art store of the exhibition.

Whether screens, murals, sculptures or installations, Street Art has a fascinating wealth of forms that reveal a wide array of positions, all rooted in the concept of Urban Art and influenced by avant-garde movements such as Fluxus, Pop Art and Conceptual Art. URBAN AFFAIRS will reflect actual developments in the movement and uncover new artistic intersections along with the participating artists.

Urban Art and Street Art are experiencing increasing global attention from significant collections, publications and institutions in the established art market, as well as an academic reappraisal of the genre within the art historical context. Works by selected street artists continue to break auction records and the fact that URBAN AFFAIRS participants El Tono and Nano 4818 are currently exhibiting at the Tate Modern Museum in London symbolizes the staggering development and widespread notoriety of this anarchic art movement.

The exhibition is organized by Riot-Arts - Agency for Urban Contemporary Art - and Stockartist, a hybrid art project that develops new approaches in today’s contemporary art market. The project is in partnership with the Culture Circle Gallery, the ATM Gallery, the Kolektiv Berlin and the Gallery Zero and supported by The issue of ArtFacts, Montana, Mitte’s Backpacker, the Polish Institute and the Foundation for German-Polish Cooperation.

Constituído por 12 casas, o antigo bairro da CP esteve durante duas décadas completamente abandonado, tendo-se convertido em palco de diversidades actividades marginais, como alcoolismo, prostituição e toxicodependência.

Em Dezembro último, a Refer, actual proprietária do bairro, selou nove das 12 casas, tapando portas e janelas com tijolos e cimento, deixando apenas três abertas: a ocupada pela família de Anabela Gama, a quem deu ordem de despejo, uma outra onde ainda mora um trabalhador da CP e uma terceira que serve de sede a uma associação de dadores de sangue.

Fonte da Refer explicou à Lusa que esta selagem visa minimizar os efeitos da utilização das casas por indigentes e prevenir actos de vandalismo.

A mesma fonte acrescentou que o projecto da Refer para aquela área "encontra-se ainda em fase de estudo".

Á parte de tudo isto resta dizer que a câmara de Viana do Castelo alojou a familia de Anabela Gama num dos seus "bairros camarários" e deixou cerca de 6/7 habitantes de outra casa (os tais "indigentes" a quem a Refer se refere) sem habitação.
Partindo do principio que a familia que foi realojada também habitava uma das casas ilegalmente, é imoral que a Câmara deixe estes outros habitantes sem local para onde ir e não lhes dê qualquer tipo de ajuda independentemente de os considerar alcoólicos, toxicodependentes ou individuos com problemas de foro psiquiátrico...

Some of the world´s most amazing stencil artists from all over the world are flying into London just at this time to create new work at an undisclosed location for the Cans Festival that will take place the 3rd, 4th and 5th May.
Blek, Banksy, 3D Del Naja, Faile, Sten, Orticanoodles and many more are some of the artists confirmed at the time on the festival.
The exact location will be announced Friday or Saturday (2nd or 3rd May).

A hit at festivals around the country BOMB THE SYSTEM is the first feature length film in over 20 years to focus on the subject of graffiti - the only art form that can also be considered a crime. Anthony ‘Blest’ (STORYTELLING’S Mark Webber) is one of the most talented and notorious graffiti artists in New York City. Despite the tragic loss of his older brother during a nightly ‘bombing’ foray with a graffiti crew, Anthony parties, shoplifts spray-paint and tags virgin walls with his signature ‘Blest’. He does his best to avoid run-ins with the cops and hostile rival crews, but can’t avoid pressure from his mother to attend college, and from his girlfriend to leave New York with her. As tensions rise, a physical threat from the cops causes the crew to intensify their bombing excursions, calling an all out war on the city. When the inevitable confrontation comes, a tragedy results that pushes Anthony to make a decision that has darker consequences. BOMB THE SYSTEM is an unforgettable portrait of the often missunderstood art form and culture of graffiti.

Bomb the System is the first feature in over 20 years to delve into the world of graffiti art. The film, shot entirely on the streets of New York City, is the feature debut of 23-year-old writer/director Adam Bhala Lough.

Mark Webber (People I Know, Storytelling, The Laramie Project) leads a talented young ensemble cast as Blest, a 19-year-old graffiti writer fresh out of high school with no ambition for the future.

New York City is Blest’s playground. He spends his days stealing spray paint from local hardware stores - and his nights getting high and “bombing” the streets with his graffiti crew. He is the most wanted writer on the NYPD Vandal Squad’s hit list, and at the same time, is attracting attention from the local gallery scene.

But things quickly turn ugly when 15-year-old Lune, the youngest member of Blest’s crew, is arrested and brutalized by the NYPD. The crew retaliates by waging an all out “graffiti war” against the city: a war that ends up costing more than one life in the end.

Bomb the System is a true New York story - a cinematic poem dedicated to the art of graffiti, and to the city where it all began more than two decades ago.

A estrela do reggae Lucky Dube foi alvejado fatalmente quinta-feira, 18, em Joanesburgo, na África do Sul. Segundo informações do site da BBC, o cantor sul-africano, que tinha 43 anos, foi vítima de uma tentativa de assalto e alvejado pelos ladrões que tentaram levar seu carro. Ele foi morto por volta das 20h (horário local) logo após deixar seu filho, que viu tudo e chamou a polícia. A notícia foi dada também pelo site oficial do cantor.


Lucky Dube começou a carreira no início dos anos 80, quando cantava na língua zulu. Em 25 anos de carreira, gravou 22 álbuns, incluindo Respect, lançado em abril de 2006. Sua arte foi marcada pela luta contra o apartheid, que manifestava por meio de um reggae tradicional e contestador.

Em 1989, Dube teve uma de suas canções, Together as One, eleita uma das dez melhores músicas da África por leitores e ouvintes da Rede BBC. Outro hit, Rastas Never Die, foi proibido no país na época do apartheid por conta da mensagem contrária ao regime.

Growing up in Los Angeles, it’s hard not to notice the graffiti that covers the sides of buildings, walls, fences and trucks in many parts of the city. It looks like meaningless scribble, but it’s used to mark territory. Though it is home to Hollywood and the entertainment industry, large swaths of the city are also claimed by violent street gangs. If you’re a gangster and walk into territory claimed by a rival gang, you could be shot to death without question.

Although there are over 100 known gangs in L.A., my encounters with gangsters had been pretty limited. I thought I could identify them by their shaved heads, baggy pants and tattoos, but then “gangsta” style became cool and it became impossible to single out individuals as bonafide “bangers.” A gang called “White Fence” controlled the area where I was working in the ‘90s. I’d also known about the gangs plaguing the L.A. streets, particularly the big ones like the “Bloods,” “Crips” and “18th Street.” I recall hearing about a small Salvadoran gang with a really long name – Mara Salvatrucha – that was considered somewhat insignificant relative to the bigger more established gangs. For those reasons, law enforcement paid little attention to it and focused their efforts at suppressing other gangs. Big Mistake.

In a very short period of time, Mara Salvatrucha, or MS-13, has arguably become the biggest and most dangerous gang in the world. In the 1980's a law was enacted that would deport non-U.S. citizens convicted of serious crimes back to their home countries after serving their sentences. This resulted in hundreds of thousands of criminal offenders, including thousands of gang members, being returned to countries that had never encountered gang problems – such has been the case with El Salvador. Rather than return to the U.S., many gang members stayed in their home countries and brought gangbanging culture with them.

Law enforcement officials (who’ve served as journalistic sources for me in the past) have kept me up to date on the issues keeping them the busiest. Over the last couple of years, several of my gang detective colleagues urged me to take a deeper look into MS-13 because members were starting to show up in many different parts of the U.S. and other countries. They were also beginning to perpetrate heinous acts of violence in areas that had never experienced such things before. The gang started to grow so fast that a federal task force was created to deal specifically with MS – a big deal considering that it started as a small L.A. street gang.

Known as the "Crowned Prince of Reggae", Dennis has been one of Jamaica's top vocalists for many years. His career began as a young teenager with Coxsone Dodd's Studio One Records where he recorded two albums.
He really hit his stride in the subsequent years though as he recorded album after album for Joe Gibbs. Dennis, like many other reggae artists, began to spread out and start recording for many other producers, including Gussie Clark, Flabba Holt, and Sly and Robbie, among others. He began a prolific release schedule that sometimes would amount to as many as six albums in one year. Dennis was in demand, and the producers were lining up at his door. RAS first became involved with Dennis when Sly and Robbie brought us the Brown Sugar album that featured tracks like "Revolution" and "Sitting and Watching" , which had been a big hit for island records.
An album from Dennis's close friend Leggo Beast was the result of a newly opened (in the early 1990's) studio called Leggo in Kingston. RAS continued to release about one album per year from Dennis, mostly produced by his close brethren Flabba Holt, bass player extraordinaire for the Roots Radics. These have also been recorded at Leggo where Flabba seemed to have the knack of getting Dennis to do his best. He will definitely go down in the reggae record books as one of Jamaica's best vocalist ever, deservedly so......

Blek Le Rat is one of the inventors of Street Art and modern Stencil Art, and has been developing his art since the beginning of the eighties. In a trip to NYC in 1971, Blek sees graffiti ‘writing’ on the streets for the first time leaving a lasting impression, which later inspired him to create his own style. It was only a decade later that Blek found the stencil and began his quest. He cut a stencil of silhouette of a rat and sprayed it everywhere in Paris for over a year, at a time when no one was making street art, apart from political graffiti. Blek revolutionized the meaning of the street stencil from Political to Art. He flipped it. This is a defining moment in the history of Street Art.

Street art has evolved and the year is now 2006 and every major stencil artist today, most famously Banksy, have been influenced by Blek’s unique style. Bansky claims, “every time I think I’ve painted something slightly original, I find out that Blek Le Rat has done it as well, only twenty years earlier…”

O meeting anual de stencilers vai ser realizado este ano em Barcelona entre 29 e 1 de Julho, conta já com a confirmação de 44 artistas de diferentes países, número que aumentará consideravelmente á medida que o encontro se aproxima.
Neste metting decorrerão "live acts" por parte dos participantes, mostrando os seus trabalhos em conjunto ou individualmente e estão já confirmados dois espaços para o acontecimento...

Falcão - Meninos do Tráfico é um documentário produzido pelo rapper MV Bill, pelo seu empresário Celso Athayde e pelo centro de audiovisual da Central Única das Favelas que retrata a vida jovens de favelas brasileiras que trabalham no tráfico de drogas. A produção independente tornou-se popular principalmente por sua transmissão no programa semanal da TV Globo Fantástico, um dos mais famosos no Brasil. O documentário foi feito entre 1998 e 2006 em que os produtores visitaram diversas comunidades pobres do Brasil, registrando em 90 horas na maioria do tempo em forma digital, e um pouco em VHS. O nome do documentário é em razão do termo "falcão" usado nas favelas, que designa aquele que possui a tarefa de vigiar a comunidade e informar quando a polícia ou algum grupo inimigo se aproxima. Os dois produtores tiveram que enfrentar o ambiente hostil de ondem viviam os jovens. A repercussão do documentário no país foi grande, sendo largamente comentado e discutido.

"O Falcão não é um caso de polícia, não é uma denúncia, não é uma lamentação. Falcão é sobretudo uma chance que o Brasil vai ter para refletir sobre uma questão do ponto de vista de quem é o culpado e a vítima. Falcão é uma convocação para que a ordem das coisas seja definitivamente mudada"

Durante as gravações, 16 dos 17 falcões entrevistados morreram, sendo 14 em apenas três meses, vítimas da violência na qual estavam inseridos. Seus funerais também foram documentados. O único sobrevivente foi empregado pelos dois produtores mas acabou voltando para o tráfico até ser preso. Celso e MV Bill estavam à sua procura para que pudessem continuar com uma nova fase de gravações, tendo em vista que, em 12 de outubro, Dia da Criança, a produção será lançada nos cinemas em forma de longa-metragem com o título de Falcão - O Sobrevivente. Para financiar o filme, o rapper terá de vender mais uma vez sua casa, mas diz não se importar com isso. O filme terá como personagem principal o único sobrevivente dos falcões, o menino que sempre sonhou em ser palhaço de circo.....
